PRIME HOGGS
A very much seasonal entry of hoggs were forward today, ranging from 29kg to 69kg with a large proportion being grass finished hoggs producing a very respectable market average of 340p/kg. Several consignments of well bred and well finished hoggs were keenly competed for and met by buyers approval selling to £205 for Texel cross from AG Butler, Hambleton, £196 for Charolais cross from KA Purtill, Wigan who sold Beltex cross at £189. Others achieved £187 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore and £185 from P Lawrenson, Chorley. Well finished standard weight hoggs continue to attract the keenest buyer attention regularly selling at £155 to £170, with grass finish hoggs, in weight specification, £140 to £155.
Today sale peaked at 422p/kg on three occasions for Beltex cross hoggs from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore and AG Butler, Hambleton. Closely followed by KA Purtill, Wigan selling the best of his at 420p/kg. Well finished in specification hoggs were generally 340p/kg to 370p.kg, with grass finished 330p/kg to 345p/kg.
Hill bred hoggs saw Mules sell to £140 and 324p/kg, Cheviots to £137 and 370p/kg, horned hoggs to £123 and 300p/kg.
It is to vendors advantage to arrive in good time to allow hoggs to be pre sorted and weighed prior to the sale, which commences at 10am prompt.
CAST SHEEP
As promised cull ewes were once again keenly competed for, with today’s sale averaging £153.50. The strongest continental cross ewes sold to £230 from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore who sold others at £220. M Beresford, Kirkby in Furness sold her best at £214 and £200. Medium continental ewes were regularly £150 to £180. Mules sold to £194 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with others at £162 from DJ&MC Platts, Caton. Other ewes today sold to £176 for Dorset from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore with Cheviot cross to £141 from DR Preston, Caton.
BREEDING SHEEP
Today sale comprised of 28 families, which continue to sell to the strong prices of recent weeks, buyers today showed preference towards ewes with stronger lambs. Aged Texel ewes with twin Texel cross lambs from TR Gorst, Bay Horse sold to £455, with others from the same good home regularly £365 to £400. Aged Suffolk cross ewes with twin Suffolk cross lambs sold to £340 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. £320 was achieved by E Parker, Mewith selling aged Dorset ewes with twin Texel cross lambs. A ring full of aged Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs sold at £315 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Ewes with singles sold to £275 for a Texel cross from E Parker, Mewith with others at £250 from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell with older ewes with younger lambs generally £175 to £200.
Ewes and lambs will be sold every Monday at 11am, with fifty families already entered for next week.
